Q: When is the next class/event?
A: Check the calendar. If it is not there we still don’t know it because either the instructor or room availability is not confirmed.
All updates are sent to our mailing list (see below).
Events are planned quarter by quarter according to the University of Chicago academic calendar (no events during breaks).
Q: Can I just show up?
A: Yes! Classes are open to everyone and you can pay the class fee (usually $5 or $3 with UofC ID) once you are there. Anyway we encourage continuous attendance through the quarter (classes are progressive) and offer discounted quarterly membership. Check the mailing list and ask at the class.
Q: How can I subscribe to the mailing list?
A: Click here to send an email to sympa@lists.uchicago.edu with subject “SUBSCRIBE tango YourName YourLastName”. Or check the listhost webpage (or send an email to tango-request@lists.uchicago.edu with subject “SUBSCRIBE”. So many ways... we really want you :-)
Q: How can I remove/unsubscribe myself from the list?
A: Click here to send an email to sympa@lists.uchicago.edu with subject “SIGNOFF tango”. Or check the listhost webpage.
Q: Which class level should I follow (Beg or Int/Adv)?
A: It depends on you, your ability and your commitment. Normally we offer two classes: Beginners (Beg) and Intermediate/Advanced (Int/Adv). Changing teachers adds variety and the classes are never the same.
Beg starts from zero at the beginning of the quarter and builds the fundamental skills necessary to dance (musicality, lead, walk, ochos, turns...). Int/adv enriches the vocabulary adding sequences or elements like barridas, sacadas, out of balance steps, ... .
Repeat Beg and practice fundamentals is always a good exercise for everyone.
If you feel comfortable with fundamentals and practice them already you are welcome to attend Int/Adv classes. Your ability to follow the material proposed will be the best judgement about your dance level.
Q: Where do I dance in Chicago?
A: Milongas and practicas are fun and excellent to improve dancing skills.
Check: http://www.tangonoticias.com/ or the Midwest Tango calendar
Q: Were are the classes?
A: Almost all our events are in Ida Noyes Hall, 1212 E 59th street, in Hyde Park. Check the bulletin board at the entrance to know the room.
